Kodiakkarai is also called as Point Calimere, is situated abutting the Palk Strait. It is the apex of the cauvery river delta, and marks a nearly right-angle turn in the coastline. A historic landmark here was the Chola lighthouse, destroyed in the tsunami of 2004.The Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary, with an area of 24.17km², was created on June 13, 1967. The sanctuary includes the cape and its three natural habitat types: dry evergreen forests,mangrove forests, and wetlands. In 1988, the sanctuary was enlarged to include the Great Vedaranyam Swamp and the Talaignayar Reserve Forest, and renamed the Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary, with a total area of 377km². Point Calimere homes the endangered endemic Indian Blackbuck and is one of the few known wintering locations of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper.It also holds large wintering populations of Greater Flamingos in India.This Wild Life Sanctuary boasts of mammals like blue buck, spotted deer, wild boar, semi wild ponies, bonnet macaque, water birds like flamingoes, ibises, herons, and spoonbills. Sea turtle, starred tortoise, vipers, marsh crocodiles, etc., are some of the reptiles. Fish, dolphins, dugong, sea lion, sea cow are occasionally found here. Besides, it is where the occurrence of varieties of corals are found.

Museums & Art Galleries

Poombuhar is in Sirkali Taluk of Nagapattinam District. It is known as Kaveripoompattinam.After the Sangam chola period a major part of Poompuhar town was swallowed by the Bay of Bengal. Though Poompuhar became a prey of times, still a few small villages remain a silent witness to the cruelty of times. The town structure of Poompuhar can be traced from the fifth chapter of Silappathikaram. Pattinapalai, Manimegalai also describe the same. The city is said to have been designed on the lines of Mayans architecture. The town was divided into well marked divisions as Pattinappakkam and Maruvurppakkam by the market place in the middle town as Nalangadi in the day and Allangadi by night. A beautiful seven-tired building of great sculptural value has been built as Sillappathikara Art gallery. The first storey is 12"high and each storey above it has a height of 5'. The topmost part, which has "Kalasam has height of 8'. The total height of art gallery is 50'.Scenes from Sillappathiram, the epic of the land have been given lively shapes in stones on the walls of the gallery. These sculptures carved by the sculptors of Mamallapuram Art College remain the treasure house of Tamil culture.


It is 35kms north of Nagapattnam on the east coastal line of Bay of Bengal. Danish Architexture is the attractions of Tranguebar. Built in 1620 exists to exhibit Danish architecture. The fort is now under the control of TamilNadu Archeological Department, houses an archaeological Museum.On the eastern side of the fort, there was a two storied building facing the sea. It was the main building of the fort. The vaulted lower storey served as a magazine and a warehouse, while the vaulted upper storey contained the church and the lodging of the governor, the Senior merchants and the chaplain. The sea on the eastern and western side protected the fort. The fort was surrounded by a moat, access to the fort being over a drawbridge. The moat has completely disappeared.

Places of Worship

Vaitheeswarankoil is situated 12kms from Mayiladuthurai and 5kms from Sirkali. This temple is the seat of another Navagraha, the Mars.In the divine songs of Devaram, Vaitheeswarankoil is called Pullirukkuvellur. The Presiding deity Lord Vaithiyanathan and the Devi is Thaiyalnayagi. Lord Muruga is called here as Arulmigu Muthukumaraswami.During the Ramayana period, rama,Lakshmana and saptarishi have worshipped the deity in this place.It is believed that Rama and his brother Lakshmana cremated the vulture king jatayu who was killed by ravana when he tried to prevent the abduction of sita at this place. There is a pond at this temple called Jatayu kundam.

Sattainathar temple is a hindu temple dedicated to lord shiva located in sirkali.The temple is incarnated by the hymns of thavaram and is classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.Sirkali Bhramapureeswarar is an ancient temple complex with 3 different Shiva Shrines. The Bhramapureeswarar shrine is housed in the lower level. The second level houses Periyanakar with Periyanayaki on a Thoni, hence the name Thoniappar. Sattainathar/ Vatukanathar is also housed here. From the steps leading to the Toniappar and the Vatukanathar shrine, one can grasp the entire layout of this vast temple, its gopurams and mandapams.There are 22 theerthams associated with this shrine.

Nagore Dargah is a dargah built over the tomb of the Sufi a saint Hazrath Nagore Shahul Hamid in 1490–1579 CE.It is located in Nagore, a coastal town in nagapattinam.The Nagore Dargah covers an area of 5 acres enclosed by a compound wall. The main complex has four entrances in each direction. Shahul Hamid is believed to have performed many miracles in Nagore, and cured the physical affliction of king Achutappa Nayak, a 16th-century Hindu ruler of Thanjavur. He is locally referred as Nagore Andavar, Achutappa Nayak, the king of Thanjavur during the 16th century, donated 200 acres of land to the entourage of Shahul, after the saint cured the king's affliction. The dargah was built on a part of the land donated by Nayak. Pratap Singh from 1739–1763 A.D. the Hindu Maratha ruler of Thanjavur prayed for a son and built one of the five and the tallest minaret with a height of 131 ft once his wish was fulfilled.The Marathas of the later period were patrons to the dargah, with the Maratha king Thuljaji, the son of Pratap Singh, donating 4,000 acres of agricultural land to the dargah.

Velankanni is a small town situated on the coast of Bay of Bengal 14 kms south of Nagappattinam. The Arokiya Madha Church or the Velankanni Basilica here is a holy place for the Christians. This renowned shrine Basilica of our Lady of health draws pilgrims from all over the world. Not only Christians but also the people of other faiths come to this Church to pray at the shrine of Our lady of health. Knowing the importance of this town the Pope in the Vatican city has declared Velankanni as a Holy city. This Roman Catholic Church has an extended Basilica, which has two floors where one can find the statue of Jesus Christ. The Gothic style of architecture is a unique feature of the Church. The church itself is an imposing building with inspiring architecture. While the buildings have been painted white roof of the church is made by the tiles with striking red in contrast to the colour of the walls.

Ananthamangalam Anjaneya temple is located in the East Coast Road in between Chidambaram and karaikal. Anjaneya temple is facing towards east. The Uthswar is inside the temple. Opposite to this temple the Three Nethra Chathurbuja Veera Anjaneyar Moolava Sannathis is situated outside this temple.Anjenayar has God Face with three eyes. His ten hands holds with Conch (Sangu), Chakram, Soolam, Kabalam, Madhatchagam, Pasamankusam, Bow, Arrow, Sattai, Navaneetham and has two feathers in both side .Temple Holy Water is pushkarani I.e.Annumar Theertham, Which is located opposite to this Moolavar temple.

The Mayuranathaswami Temple is a Hindu temple in the town of Mayiladuthurai in the Nagapattinam District.The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god shiva and has given its name to the town itself.The main icon is a lingam and the presiding deity is called Mayuranathar because the Hindu goddess parvathi worshipped Shiva here in the form of a mayura.The temple was built by the Medieval cholas.The oldest inscriptions on the temple walls date to the time of Kulothunga chola I.Massive renovations were carried out in the 17th century.The temple complex is 719 feet long and 52 feet wide.The gopuram at the eastern entrance to the temple is nine storeys high and measures 194 feet. The idol of durga near the northern entrance of the temple is expertly sculpted and differs from those in other temples.On the temple walls, there is the sculpture of a devotee trying to sever his head as an offering to the God.

Amritaghateswarar Abhirami Temple is a hindu temple dedicated to the god shiva and his wife parvati in her form as Abhirami located in Thirukkadaiyur which is 21km East of Mayiladuthurai. This temple is particularly associated with Shiva saving his devotee Markendeya from death and the tale of saint Abirami Pattar, a devotee of the presiding goddess.It is one of the 275 paadal petra sthalams, where three of the most revered Nayanars Appar, Suntharar and Tirugnana Sambhandar have sung the glories of this temple. The great Saint Abirami Bhattar composed the divine songs of Abirami Anthathi. The temple with architecture of the Chola dynasty, occupies a very vast area of 11 acres with five courtyards, several imposing temple towers, and large and spacious mandapas. It can be ascertained from inscriptions in the temple that it has been in existence since at least the tenth or eleventh century, during the reign of Raja Raja Chola I. Among the sixty-three Shaiva poet-saints, collectively known as the Nayanars, Kungili Nayanar and Kari Nayanar both worshiped and attained liberation from the cycle of birth and death here.

Sikkal Singara Velan Temple is one of the most popular Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Muruga and a contender for the unofficial seventh Padaiveedu of Muruga.It is located in the village of Sikkal which is near Nagapattinam.It is believed in Hindu mythology that this place was once a jasmine forest and due to it pleasant smell, the semi-human goddess in Hindu mythology, Kamadenu lives here. It is one of the rare traditional Hindu temples that has both Shiva and Vishnu deities in the same complex.The pillars of this temple are adorned with intricate and exquisite carvings. This place has an old Shiva Temple where Lord Muruga is worshipped in the form of Singaravelan.

The town thirumullaivasal is 14Kms east of Sirkali. It is popular for its fine beach, which is full of natural beauty. This town has an ancient temple. The presiding deity of this temple is Arulmigu Mullaivananathar. Saint Tirugnana Sambandar had praised the Lord of the temple in his Thevaram. This is the 7th Shiva temple on the northern bank Cauvery praised in Thevaram. The temple was constructed by the Early Chola king Killivalavan. The main idol is shivalinga.Sea shore is just half a kilometer from the temple.
